Sequence Moves Against Simplex to Protect Intellectual Property

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 16, 2001--Sequence Design, Inc., the Design Closure Company, today announced it has filed a complaint against Simplex Solutions, Inc. (Nasdaq:SPLX) of Sunnyvale, Calif., alleging patent infringement against its extraction technology. The complaint was filed Friday, August 10, in the San Jose Division of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California.

The complaint states that United States Patent No. 5,901,063 (also known as the '063 Patent), entitled ``System And Method For Extracting Parasitic Impedance From An Integrated Circuit Layout,'' is owned by Sequence. This patented technology is incorporated into Sequence's ExtractionStage(TM) suite of electronic design automation (EDA) tools.

Sequence alleges in the complaint that Simplex has infringed on one or more claims in the patent by ``making, using, offering to sell or selling products which embody the patented invention and which use the methods of the '063 Patent . . .''

In its complaint, Sequence is asking that Simplex be permanently enjoined from infringing on the '063 Patent, and requests that the court award damages.

Protecting its proprietary technology is important to Sequence. The company has been granted three patents (two for extraction), with an additional 11 patents pending (three for extraction). As interconnect effects dominate at the sub-180 nanometer level, extraction of parasitic resistance, capacitance and inductance become critical to achieving timing, power and signal integrity closure.

Sequence recently announced the formation of a strategic business unit dedicated to licensing the company's intellectual property.
